WaterSafe Plumber Profile: Brett Knowles

We caught up with Brett Knowles, a dedicated WaterSafe-approved plumber and owner of BK Plumbing. We delved into his journey in the industry, what a typical day looks like, and why he's so committed to a vital aspect of plumbing safety: lead-free solder.

Two decades of plumbing excellence

"I've been in the industry 24 years now," Brett said, highlighting his extensive practical experience. His qualifications underscore his expertise: "City and Guilds 6129, unvented/G3, electrics for plumbers BPEC, PASMA tower training and crucially, water regs training." This comprehensive skillset ensures he's well-prepared for any plumbing challenge.

Brett established BK Plumbing in 2021, bravely starting his own venture during the pandemic. His typical day is a busy mix of installing radiators, fixing leaks, fitting bathrooms, etc:

Basically, if water runs through it, I fix it!

He also manages essential tasks like putting together quotes and ordering parts, and yes, sometimes hoping for more cups of tea!

The vital pledge: Embracing lead-free solder

A core part of our discussion focused on WaterSafe's campaign to encourage plumbers to only carry and use lead-free solder.

Brett was quick to sign our pledge:

"I signed the pledge to help others understand the importance of only using and carrying lead-free solder and to rid the industry of lead solder."

Brett believes it’s an important campaign due to the potential impact on people's health and BK Plumbing only stocks and carries lead-free solder.

When asked if he'd support a ban on lead solder in the UK, his answer was unequivocal:

"Absolutely. Lead solder should only be used in closed central heating systems; however, lead-free solder can be used in every situation within a property."
