Survey finds half of homeowners are missing key protection for home plumbing

Almost half of homeowners don’t use approved plumbers for work in their home, according to research by WaterSafe Register, the UK’s national register of approved plumbers.

Just 48% of homeowners say they only use approved plumbers for home plumbing work - one of the most effective ways to protect water quality at the tap.

Drinking water quality in England is high, with overall compliance reaching 99.97% in 2024 according to the Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI). However, the DWI’s latest annual report shows that more than 31% of all water quality events that year occurred on consumer premises - linked to issues including pipework fittings, cross-connections, lead pipes, nickel leaching from taps and connectors, and the improper use or absence of backflow protection.

Homeowners who use an approved plumber may also avoid the need to notify their water company before certain types of plumbing work, saving time and reducing the risk of a non-compliant installation.
