Nine in ten homeowners
want plumbers to be officially registered

New research shows overwhelming public backing for stronger safeguards around drinking water in homes, with 91% of UK homeowners agreeing that plumbers should be qualified and vetted.

The findings come from a survey carried out for WaterSafe, the UK’s national register of approved plumbers and water professionals. 

65 per cent of those polled strongly agreed that the Government should make it compulsory for all plumbers, and other installers working on drinking water installations, to have a minimum set of qualifications, and be on an official register. A further 25 per cent somewhat agreed.

WaterSafe says the results highlight how strongly the public values competence and trust when it comes to the people installing and maintaining their drinking water systems.

Jonathan Samuel, Managing Director of WaterSafe, said: “These findings send a clear message: people want to know the person working on their home’s plumbing is properly trained, competent and accountable.

“WaterSafe-registered contractors are fully qualified, vetted on-site, and supported by the UK’s water companies. They are trained to work safely with drinking water and help households avoid issues such as contamination, poor installation, and costly repairs.

Jonathan continued: “While the UK doesn’t currently have a mandatory plumbing register like Gas Safe, WaterSafe already offers homeowners a simple way to find trusted, qualified professionals who meet the strict standards for protecting drinking water.”

WaterSafe is encouraging homeowners planning any plumbing work – from fitting a new kitchen tap to installing a bathroom – to use its free online register at watersafe.org.uk. 

All WaterSafe members hold recognised plumbing qualifications, insurance, and have specialist training in the Water Fittings Regulations, which help maintain safe drinking water.

Using an approved plumber helps protect water quality, reducing the risk of contamination from incorrect fittings or poor workmanship.

using a WaterSafe-registered installer may avoid the need for homeowners to notify their water company before certain types of plumbing work are undertaken, saving time and hassle.
