I can hear a banging noise coming from my pipework. What could it be?

If you can hear water pipes banging inside your property, possible causes are:

  • Faulty ball valves can generate noise

  • If pipes are not clipped correctly, they may move and hit against walls/flooring, creating noise

  • If air is trapped at the stop tap, this can cause the pipes to vibrate and cause a hammering/banging sound

  • Loose fitting washers (jumpers) in stop taps.

To fix banging pipes, it's important to address the underlying cause of the sudden pressure changes in your plumbing system. This issue can stress pipework, joints and fixings, potentially leading to leaks or even pipe ruptures over time.

Firstly, check if your pipes are properly secured with brackets or clips. Loose pipes can move when water flow stops suddenly, causing banging sounds. Adding extra supports can help reduce movement.

Excessively high water pressure can contribute to pipe banging. Use a pressure-reducing valve to regulate the flow and protect your plumbing system from stress. Appliances like washing machines and dishwashers have fast-closing valves that can cause pressure shocks. Upgrading to slow-closing valves can help minimise the issue.

If the noise persists or worsens, it’s best to call a qualified plumber. They can identify the source of the problem and make necessary adjustments to prevent long term damage. Use our search tool to find an approved plumber in your area.
