Where is my water meter?

Water meters can be installed either inside or outside your home, depending on the property’s design and the layout of the water supply.

External meters are usually found near the main stop tap, close to the edge of your property. They are often covered by small metal or plastic lids, which may be square or circular. Some meters have a protective foam or polystyrene layer inside the cover to prevent frost damage. If your water supply is shared with neighbouring properties, the meter may still be on your property but positioned to accommodate the shared connection.

Internal meters are generally installed where water enters your home, often near the internal stop tap. Typical locations include under the kitchen sink, in a downstairs toilet, an airing cupboard or a garage. Some meters may be behind a toilet or in other utility areas.

If you are unsure whether your property has a meter, check your water bill; some providers indicate the presence of a meter using specific customer reference numbers. Newer homes, particularly those built after 1990, are more likely to have a meter.

If you cannot locate your meter or are unsure whether it belongs to your property, contact your water company. They can confirm the meter’s location, guide you on how to take readings and arrange a visit if needed.
